Most infections are asymptomatic with no external signs or symptoms. However, they damage the lymphatic system and kidneys and alter the immune system.
The painful and highly disfiguring manifestations of the disease lymphedema, elephantiasis, and scrotal inflammation appear later on and can lead to rejection and social stigma, with a subsequent loss of self-esteem and fewer job opportunities for infected individuals, which can negatively impact their economic and social conditions.
The disease can be eliminated in the Americas through the simultaneous mass administration of two drugs diethylcarbamazine and albendazole once a year to people living in at-risk areas, over a period of at least five consecutive years.
In areas where the disease is endemic, the recommended preventive measures include the use of screens in windows and doors and mosquito bed nets in homes, as well as the elimination of mosquito breeding sites and application of insecticides in open latrines. Home Fact Sheets Lymphatic filariasis in the Americas.
Lymphatic filariasis in the Americas. Research is undertaken to evaluate, inform and improve our programme strategies, helping to eliminate this disease more quickly and fairly. While river blindness is transmitted by the black fly and lymphatic filariasis by the mosquito, both diseases are caused by an infection of a filarial worm and often occur in the same places.
In countries where river blindness in not co-endemic, lymphatic filariasis is treated using diethylcarbamazine, produced by Eisai, and albendazole tablets, donated by GlaxoSmithKline. In , we provided more than two million treatments for LF worldwide.
We also trained more than , local volunteers to distribute medication via mass drug administration to treat a range of neglected tropical diseases, including lymphatic filariasis. Although people suffering from advanced lymphoedema cannot be cured, the symptoms can be eased through surgery and care.
Sightsavers works with WASH water, sanitation and hygiene organisations to help households access clean water and facilities, so people can clean their affected limbs and care for their skin with clean water and soap. Symptoms can also be helped by elevating limbs and by wearing footwear.
Hydrocele can be cured through surgery, transforming the lives of men affected. An estimated 42 million people in DRC need treatment for lymphatic filariasis. Find out how Sightsavers is working to protect communities. People in Nigeria with diseases affecting the skin have shared their photos as part of a research project into how these conditions can be better managed.
Lymphatic filariasis is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites a person and deposits larvae of the worm in the skin. The larvae travel to the lymphatic system Overview of the Lymphatic System The lymphatic system is a vital part of the immune system. The adults produce millions of worm larvae called microfilariae that circulate in the bloodstream and lymphatic system. The infection is spread when a mosquito bites an infected person, then bites another person.
Lymphatic filariasis symptoms are caused by adult worms. Microfilariae do not cause symptoms and gradually disappear from the bloodstream after people leave the affected area. Early in the infection, people may have symptoms for 4 to 7 days.
They may have a fever, swollen lymph nodes in the armpits and groin, and pain in the limbs and groin. Pus may collect in a leg and drain to the skin's surface, resulting in a scar. Bacterial infections of the skin and tissues under the skin are more likely because the worms block the lymphatic vessels which makes the immune system Overview of the Immune System The immune system is designed to defend the body against foreign or dangerous invaders.
Such invaders include Microorganisms commonly called germs, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi Parasites Often, symptoms resolve, then recur. They are more severe when people are exposed to the infection for the first time. After many years of infection, the lymph vessels widen. Most people have no symptoms. But in a few people, swelling gradually becomes permanent chronic.
The legs are affected most often, but the arms, breasts, and genitals may be also. This swelling called lymphedema Lymphedema Lymphedema is the accumulation of lymph in tissues, resulting in swelling. When lymphatic vessels are injured or obstructed, lymph fluid cannot drain and accumulates in tissues, causing swelling The adult worms live in the lymphatic system and reduce the flow of lymph fluid from tissues, causing the fluid to back up in lymph vessels.
The swelling makes the skin spongy. Pressing on the skin leaves an indentation that does not disappear right away called pitting. Chronic swelling may make the skin hard and thick called elephantiasis. In men, the scrotum may swell. Bacterial and fungal infections of the skin are common in people with lymphatic filariasis.
These infections contribute to the development of elephantiasis of the legs and occasionally arms and sometimes massive swelling in the scrotum. Less commonly, the lungs are affected by microfilariae in the blood stream, resulting in a disorder called tropical pulmonary eosinophilia. People may have a low-grade fever, feel short of breath, cough, or wheeze.
If the infection persists, scar tissue fibrosis may form in the lungs. Doctors diagnose lymphatic filariasis when they identify microfilariae in a sample of blood examined under a microscope.
When ultrasonography is done, adult worms can be seen moving in the widened lymph vessels.
